Motorists face hefty £1,000 fines as the latest ’26 number plates launch today for all new cars registered from March 1, 2026. These updated designs mark the DVLA’s biannual release, but strict rules apply to ensure compliance.
New ’26 Plates: Key Rules and Restrictions
Owners can only fit the new ’26 plates on vehicles registered on or after today. Applying them to older cars misrepresents the vehicle’s age, which the DVLA prohibits. Officials state: “If you misrepresent a vehicle registration number you will not get back any money that you have paid for the registration number, or any other costs you have to pay. You can’t use a registration number to make your vehicle appear younger than it actually is.”
UK regulations require number plates to display the registration number accurately. Drivers must avoid rearranging letters or numbers, or altering them to obscure readability. Prohibited modifications include changing spacing, font style, or using bolts and fixings to alter character appearance.
Penalties for Violations
Breaches lead to severe consequences: fines up to £1,000, automatic MOT failure, and potential permanent withdrawal of the registration with no refund.
Regulations emphasize: “Number plates must show your registration number correctly. You cannot rearrange letters or numbers, or alter them so that they’re hard to read. You could be fined up to £1,000 and your vehicle will fail its MOT test if you drive with incorrectly displayed number plates.”
Expert Insights on the Launch
Mark Trimbee, CEO of RegTransfers, comments: “The release of new number plates is always an exciting time for us, as it brings a fresh wave of fun, appealing and valuable combinations to our roads. Sadly, it also brings a new horde of combinations that are considered a bit too risky to allow out into the public. The DVLA has an unfortunate role to play, and while some might see this as them being ‘killjoys’, they do have the responsibility to keep people safe from offensive, derogatory and provocative plates. This new list of banned combinations is one of the larger ones we’ve seen, but as with each new release, there will still be plenty of great combinations to look out for.”
