US pop and country singer Floyd Brown has died at the age of 79. Family members confirmed his passing on Tuesday, June 9th, after a prolonged struggle with cancer.
A Legacy of Music and Mentorship
His niece announced the news via social media, remembering him as “one of the greatest.” Chase Tyler, a fellow musician from Baton Rouge, paid tribute, ing shock at the news. “I don’t think anyone saw it coming,” Tyler stated. “Floyd was a mentor early in my career. He was always a sweetheart to me and very encouraging to the younger artists coming up behind him.”
Brown’s musical journey began in 1960 with the release of his debut song, “Thunderbird Beach.” He became widely recognized for popular hits such as “Kiss Me Just One More Time,” “I Can’t Sleep If I Can’t Sleep With You,” and “There Lies the Difference.” His distinctive blend of swamp pop and country influences cultivated a dedicated fanbase throughout South Louisiana.
From Local Legend to National Recognition
In 1979, Brown launched his first album, “Finally,” under Jimmy Rogers’ Baton Rouge-based label, Bayou Boogie Records. His career saw a significant boost in the 1980s when he achieved victory on the Nashville Network’s talent competition, “You Can Be A Star.” This win secured him a record deal, though his trajectory faced challenges when the contract was terminated during a company restructuring. A similar situation occurred with Capitol Records.
Despite these setbacks, Brown maintained his status as a local music icon. In 2005, a compilation album titled “The Best Of Floyd Brown,” featuring 12 tracks, was released by AMG Records, celebrating his enduring contributions to music.
