Toronto Pledges Major Improvements to Winter Sidewalk Clearing Operations

Published on

Toronto residents struggling to navigate snow-covered sidewalks following the recent winter storm can expect significant improvements in clearing operations, according to city officials. The issue has become the top service request among residents in recent days.

City Acknowledges Sidewalk Clearing Challenges

City Manager Paul Johnson acknowledged current shortcomings in snow removal efforts during a recent public address. ‘Last night we started to send more crews out to do sidewalks,’ Johnson stated, noting that additional inspectors will be deployed to monitor work quality and identify problem areas. ‘Clearly there’s a gap in our performance around sidewalks and we’re hoping to improve that in the next 24-hour cycle.’

Strategic Snow Removal Plan

The snow removal operation, which began Tuesday evening near hospitals, will expand to include highways, bridges, and narrow local roads. Mayor Olivia Chow announced that orange notification signs will be posted on residential streets 24 hours before crews arrive for snow clearance.

Resident Cooperation Requested

Officials are asking residents to assist by moving their vehicles when notices are posted. Johnson clarified that these notices are not threats of fines or towing but rather requests for cooperation to expedite the clearing process. Snowplows will clear streets one side at a time, with crews managing any necessary vehicle relocations.

Enhanced Focus on Accessibility

Mayor Chow emphasized that snow removal has become a key priority this year, unlike previous seasons. The city has allocated substantial reserve funds for these operations while remaining within budget constraints.

‘All I’m concerned about right now is [that] a mom with a stroller … or a senior with a walker can actually navigate through those narrow sidewalks that have snow on it,’ Chow stated, highlighting the focus on accessibility.

Contractor Coordination

Most sidewalk clearing operations are handled by contractors, and officials expect the comprehensive snow removal strategy to significantly improve sidewalk conditions throughout the city. The initiative represents a marked shift in the city’s approach to winter maintenance, with a stronger emphasis on ensuring accessible pathways for all residents.
