Extreme Cold Alert: Ontario Braces for Dangerous -38°C Wind Chills

Published on

A severe cold snap is set to grip southern Ontario, with dangerous wind chill values expected to plunge as low as -38°C in some areas. The extreme weather event will stretch from Windsor through Toronto and extend eastward to Ottawa beginning Thursday night.

Dangerous Wind Chills Expected

In the Toronto region, residents should prepare for wind chill values between -30°C and -35°C, while areas further north and east could experience even more severe conditions reaching -33°C to -38°C. These frigid temperatures are forecasted to persist from Thursday night into early Friday morning.

Health and Safety Warnings

Medical experts warn that these extreme conditions can cause frostbite to develop within minutes on exposed skin, particularly when factoring in the wind chill. The public is urged to watch for warning signs including:

  • Color changes on fingers and toes
  • Unexpected pain or numbness
  • Tingling sensations
  • Unusual swelling

Safety Precautions

Anyone experiencing these symptoms should immediately move indoors and begin the warming process. Health officials strongly advise residents to wear appropriate winter clothing and limit time outdoors during these extreme conditions.

Pet Safety Alert

Pet owners are reminded that these dangerous temperatures pose significant risks to animals as well. Experts emphasize that if conditions are too cold for humans, they are also too cold for pets to remain outdoors for extended periods.

The cold weather system is expected to impact a broad geographical area, affecting major population centers including Windsor, the Greater Toronto Area, Barrie, cottage country, Peterborough, and Kingston. Residents throughout these regions are advised to take necessary precautions and stay updated on changing weather conditions.
