PM Modi and Venezuela Acting President Agree to Deepen Ties

Published on

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a phone conversation with Venezuela’s Acting President Delcy Rodríguez, marking a key step in diplomatic engagement between the two nations. The discussion focused on enhancing cooperation across various sectors, reflecting India’s interest in bolstering relations with the South American country amid evolving global energy markets.

Commitment to Expanded Partnership

In a post on social media platform X, Prime Minister Modi shared details of the call, stating, “I spoke with Acting President of Venezuela, Ms. Delcy Rodríguez. We agreed to further deepen and expand our bilateral partnership in all areas, with a shared vision of taking India-Venezuela relations to new heights in the years ahead.” This exchange underscores a mutual intent to strengthen ties in diverse fields.

Energy Sector Focus

The conversation occurs as India works to diversify its oil supplies, with Venezuela—a prominent member of OPEC—playing a crucial role. The country possesses the world’s largest proven oil reserves, which are particularly important for India, as the nation relies on imports for approximately 85% of its crude oil needs. This outreach aligns with efforts to manage international sanctions affecting Venezuela while ensuring stable energy sources.

Opportunities Beyond Oil

Beyond energy, the leaders explored potential growth in sectors such as defense, pharmaceutical exports, and agricultural technology. These areas represent opportunities for mutual benefit, helping India expand its footprint in Latin America while maintaining balanced international relations.

Political Context

Delcy Rodríguez, who previously served as Venezuela’s Foreign Minister and was a close associate of former President Nicolás Maduro, assumed the role of Acting President following Maduro’s removal through a U.S.-led operation known as Absolute Resolve. This development has contributed to ongoing political instability in Venezuela. Prime Minister Modi’s engagement signals a commitment to continuity in bilateral relations, promoting dialogue and stability in the region.
