A 2017 social media post from Todd Monken, the newly appointed head coach of the Cleveland Browns, highlights his perspective on former President Donald Trump shortly after the 2016 election.
Monken, who transitioned to the Browns this week from the Baltimore Ravens, expressed support in the post, stating: ‘Don’t get the Trump hatred. All the man did was run for office and the ELECTORAL COLLEGE voted him in. Is that his fault? Don’t think so!’
Fan Reactions to the Resurfaced Post
The post resurfaced on Friday, sparking varied responses from Browns supporters. Many voiced approval, with one fan commenting: ‘The Browns have found themselves a great coach!’ Another added: ‘Couldn’t agree more coach!’
Not all feedback was positive, however. A critic advised: ‘Stay in your lane and stay out of politics.’ Others questioned the team’s future choices, asking: ‘Welp… who are we hiring next offseason Browns fans?’ Enthusiastic supporters even inquired: ‘Where can I purchase a Todd Monken jersey? Thank you in advance.’
Monken’s Hiring and Background
The Browns named Monken their 19th full-time head coach on Wednesday, concluding a three-week search. He steps in after Kevin Stefanski’s dismissal on January 5, following Cleveland’s 5-12 finish to the season.
This marks Monken’s first NFL head coaching position after 11 years as an assistant. He served as the Ravens’ offensive coordinator for the past three seasons and previously held the same role with the Browns in 2019 under Freddie Kitchens.
Speculation had favored defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz, who built one of the league’s strongest units. Cleveland topped the NFL in total defense in 2023 and ranked fourth this season, highlighted by Myles Garrett’s 23 sacks and a new single-season record. Schwartz, under contract for another year, likely seeks opportunities elsewhere after the decision.
The hire represents the seventh under owners Jimmy and Dee Haslam since 2012. The prior six coaches posted a 73-139-1 regular-season record, second-worst in the NFL, underscoring ongoing challenges in building a competitive team.
