Liverpool hosts Newcastle United at Anfield for a crucial Premier League encounter on Saturday evening. Both teams vie for a top-four finish to secure Champions League qualification next season.
Recent European Performances
The Reds advanced directly to the Champions League knockout stage after a dominant 6-0 victory over Qarabag earlier this week under manager Arne Slot. Meanwhile, Eddie Howe’s Newcastle earned a spot in the playoff round with a resilient 1-1 draw against defending champions Paris Saint-Germain at Parc des Princes. The Magpies now prepare for a mid-February playoff against Qarabag to reach the last 16.
Key Injuries and Team Updates
Injuries challenge both squads heading into the match. Liverpool lacks a dedicated right-back following injuries to Jeremie Frimpong and Conor Bradley, forcing adjustments in defense.
Newcastle faces significant absences as well. Star striker Alexander Isak sits out with a broken leg, denying him a reunion with his former club. Captain Bruno Guimaraes remains sidelined by an ankle injury that has kept him out of the past two games. Center-back Fabian Schar misses the rest of the season, while Tino Livramento deals with a hamstring problem. As a result, midfielder Lewis Miley filled in at right wing-back during the midweek European tie in Paris.
These setbacks add intrigue to the clash, as both sides aim to solidify their positions in the race for European spots. Expect tactical tweaks to compensate for the missing players.
