Stevenson Memorial Hospital and the Ontario government have awarded a $174 million contract to Pomerleau Inc. for the first phase of a major redevelopment project. The new state-of-the-art facility will rise next to the existing hospital, supported entirely by provincial funding.
Construction Timeline and Key Features
This agreement signals the immediate start of construction in the coming weeks, marking a significant advancement in local healthcare infrastructure. The project aims to modernize services for New Tecumseth and nearby communities.
“We anticipate a strong partnership with Pomerleau Inc. to construct a cutting-edge hospital that reshapes healthcare delivery in our region,” stated Carmine Stumpo, Supervisor at Stevenson Memorial Hospital.
Addressing Growing Demand
The original hospital on Fletcher Crescent in Alliston, built in 1964, was designed to handle just 7,000 emergency department visits annually. Today, it manages close to 35,000 such visits each year, highlighting the urgent need for expansion.
The redevelopment will double the hospital’s footprint to approximately 147,000 square feet. The emergency department will triple in size, featuring contemporary and welcoming areas for patients, families, and staff. Additional enhancements include:
- An enlarged medical and surgical inpatient unit with fully private patient rooms.
- Upgraded diagnostic imaging areas equipped with the latest technology, including the hospital’s inaugural MRI suite.
- A refreshed obstetrics unit.
- Advanced surgical suites designed for optimal efficiency.
Government Commitment to Healthcare
“Ontario’s government continues to prioritize substantial investments in our healthcare network, ensuring residents receive timely and accessible care,” said Sylvia Jones, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health. “This initiative at Stevenson Memorial Hospital will streamline access to high-quality services for families across generations.”
Officials project the full redevelopment to wrap up by late 2028, promising long-term improvements in community health outcomes.
