Enhanced Policing Measures in Birmingham Neighborhoods
Authorities in Birmingham have activated Section 60 powers across specific neighborhoods to address a series of recent serious crimes, including a firearms incident and a severe assault. These measures, effective from 7 p.m. on Saturday, January 31, until 3 a.m. the following Sunday, enable officers to conduct stop-and-search operations without requiring reasonable suspicion.
The targeted area encompasses Winson Green, along with sections of Rotton Park and Brookfields, extending from Handsworth Booth Street through the Jewellery Quarter to Edgbaston village. In addition to these powers, an increased number of officers will patrol the region to provide community reassurance and maintain public safety.
Response to January Incidents
This heightened enforcement follows investigations into notable events earlier in January, such as a discharge of a firearm and a Section 18 wounding—a serious assault involving intent to cause grievous bodily harm. West Midlands Police aim to deter further incidents through proactive policing.
A West Midlands Police spokesperson stated: “We are implementing Section 60 powers in designated parts of Birmingham this evening and overnight. These allow stop-and-search actions without needing reasonable grounds. This step responds to ongoing probes into serious incidents, including a firearms discharge and a Section 18 wounding from earlier this month. The powers apply to the outlined area from 7 p.m. today until 3 a.m. tomorrow.”
The force emphasized its commitment to safety, noting: “Our primary goal remains protecting the community. We will sustain a stronger police presence to support local residents.” For more on stop-and-search procedures, residents can refer to official West Midlands Police resources.
