Flood Alerts Reduced Across Vancouver Island

Authorities at the B.C. River Forecast Centre have lifted multiple flood warnings and watches throughout Vancouver Island and other regions, following a decrease in rainfall. Despite the improvements, persistent flooding in the Comox Valley has led the city of Courtenay to shutter several parks and trails.

The forecast centre downgraded the flood warning for the Somass River to a high streamflow advisory. It also terminated warnings and advisories for the Courtenay, Tsolum River, Dove Creek, and Englishman rivers. Similar alerts for Haida Gwaii and the province’s south coast have concluded as water levels stabilize.

Parks and Trails Closed in Courtenay

The Comox Valley Regional Emergency Operations Centre reports that flooding has forced the closure of key sites in Courtenay today, including Lewis Park, the inner loop of Simms Park, Puntledge Park, and McPhee Meadows. Officials urge residents to avoid these areas until further notice to ensure safety.

State of Local Emergency Declared

The regional district activated a state of local emergency on Friday in response to intense rainfall that triggered evacuations at a campground and 12 nearby properties in the Comox Valley. This action followed initial flood warnings for Dove Creek and the Tsolum and Courtenay rivers, which have now been rescinded as the waterways begin to recede.

Residents should monitor ongoing updates from local authorities, as conditions can change rapidly with weather patterns.
