10 Boy Names Fading Fast: Top Declines for 2026

Published on

Recent analysis of Office for National Statistics (ONS) baby name data highlights a shift in parental preferences, with several once-popular boy names at risk of disappearing from the top 100 rankings by 2026. As naming trends evolve, these selections may soon become rare choices for newborns.

Key Insights from the Data

The study examined recent trends in boy names, identifying those experiencing the sharpest declines. Factors such as the pursuit of fresh, unique options appear to drive this change, leaving traditional favorites behind.

Top Three Names in Decline

Leading the downturn is Brody, which plummeted 17 positions from 82nd to 99th in a single year. Registrations dropped from 630 boys in 2023 to just 553 in 2024, positioning it as the year’s most significant loser and signaling a potential exit from the top 100.

Mason follows closely, slipping 13 spots to 63rd place. It saw a notable decrease from 1,118 uses in 2023 to 806 in 2024, demonstrating that even contemporary picks can lose ground amid evolving tastes.

Rounding out the top three is Toby, which fell 10 places to 86th. This classic name went from 678 instances in 2023 to 621 in 2024, indicating a gradual fade as families opt for more modern alternatives.

Expert Perspective on Naming Trends

Prashant, a naming expert, explains the phenomenon: “Names function much like trends in fashion or interior design. They surge in appeal when they seem innovative or stylish, yet they can decline rapidly as parents seek out novel or enduring choices.

“This explains the waning interest in names like Brody, Mason, and Toby. They gained traction a few years back, but now families gravitate toward selections that resonate as more contemporary or classic.

“We observe this pattern annually through personalized gift customizations, making it intriguing to see which names enchant one year and recede the next.”

The full list of 10 names projected to fall out of the top 100 underscores the dynamic nature of baby naming, urging parents to consider timeless appeal amid fleeting popularity.
