Regina Muslim Students Distribute Winter Aid to Homeless

Published on

Students from the University of Regina’s Muslim community united to distribute more than 100 winter packages and meals aimed at addressing homelessness in the city. Volunteers handed out the items on foot and by car, starting at Carmichael Outreach and covering various locations throughout Regina.

Collaborative Effort by Local Organizations

The event resulted from collaboration among six campus and community groups, including the Muslim Medical Association of Canada, Saskatchewan Arabs Society, Muslim Professionals Society, Islamic Relief at the University of Regina, and One Faith Foundation. Organizers assemble and deliver these meals and packages annually as a tradition to support those in need.

Motivation Rooted in Faith

Participants draw inspiration from their faith, viewing community service as a core aspect of Islam. Bushra Alzawaid, a first-year student at the University of Regina, explained, “This act is part of the Islamic pillars called Zakat, which involves giving back to the community through charity.”

Expanding Reach Across Saskatchewan

Now in its third year in Regina and fifth in Saskatoon, the initiative continues to grow. Following the Regina distribution this weekend, a similar event takes place in Saskatoon next weekend. As Ramadan approaches, students plan additional activities to combine faith observance with community giving.
