Piers Morgan recently opened up about his once-close relationship with U.S. President Donald Trump, detailing how years of support gave way to tension over political differences. In an appearance on Jordan Peterson’s podcast, Morgan reflected on their bond, which originated well before Trump’s presidency during their time together on the U.S. version of The Apprentice.

Early Support and Personal Outreach

After Morgan’s departure from CNN in 2015, Trump stood out as one of only three or four people in America who reached out to him personally. Trump called every month for several months, asking, ‘How are you doing? Are you okay? Can I help?’ Morgan noted that this gesture left a lasting impression, emphasizing that while others might have had vested interests, Trump followed through unlike most.

The Exclusive Interview Promise

When Trump won the presidency in 2016, Morgan called to congratulate him and requested one favor in return: the first international television interview. Trump immediately agreed, saying ‘Done.’ True to his word, he granted Morgan a 45-minute sit-down at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. Morgan described the opportunity as a career boost and praised Trump’s reliability.

Morgan highlighted Trump’s deep appreciation for loyalty, stating that if someone was loyal to him, ‘he was very, very, very loyal back.’ He argued this trait is often misunderstood by Trump’s critics.

The Breaking Point Over Election Claims

Their friendship faced challenges when Morgan directly confronted Trump about allegations of a stolen 2020 U.S. election. ‘I’ve told him to his face,’ Morgan said, adding that ‘he doesn’t want to hear it.’ This disagreement marked a significant strain in their relationship.

Signs of Reconciliation

Despite the fallout, the two have mended fences. Last year, while discussing their dynamic on Good Morning Britain, Morgan shared that he spoke with Trump on the morning of a planned meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The meeting, which occurred hours before a proposed U.S.-Ukraine deal, was canceled after a heated White House exchange involving both presidents and U.S. Vice President JD Vance.

Morgan recounted receiving the call while riding in a black cab in London. ‘My phone goes, I could see it was him, I have him under ‘DJT’ in my phone,’ he said with a grin, referring to Trump’s initials.
