Kendrick Lamar Sets New Grammy Milestone

Kendrick Lamar made history at the 2026 Grammy Awards by winning five trophies, bringing his total to 26 and eclipsing Jay-Z’s previous record of 25 for the most awards won by a rapper in the ceremony’s 66-year history.

Lamar’s latest victories include Record of the Year for “Luther” featuring SZA, Best Rap Performance, Best Rap Song, Best Melodic Rap Performance, and Best Rap Album for GNX. These accolades follow his five wins from the previous year, solidifying his influence in contemporary music.

During his acceptance speech for Best Rap Album, Lamar reflected on the moment: “It is hip-hop as usual, man. I’m not good at talking about myself, but I express it through the music. It’s an honor to be here. Hip-hop is going to always be right here. We are going to be in these suits looking good, having our folks with us. We are going to be having the culture with us. So I appreciate y’all. God is to glory. Love y’all.”

Background and Rise to Fame

Born in 1987 in Compton, California, Lamar grew up in challenging circumstances, with his family relying on welfare and food stamps. He witnessed violence early in life, including his first murder at age five. Drawing inspiration from West Coast icons like Tupac Shakur, Dr. Dre, and Snoop Dogg, he began releasing music in high school under the moniker K.Dot.

His debut studio album, Section.80, arrived in 2011, but Good Kid, M.A.A.D City in 2012 marked his breakthrough. The album’s introspective tracks explored life in Compton, addressing race relations and poverty, earning widespread acclaim. Timothy Welbeck, a professor of African American studies at Temple University, noted that it demonstrated Lamar’s ability to create timeless quality and compelling storytelling accessible to diverse audiences.

Subsequent releases like To Pimp a Butterfly (2015) incorporated jazz, soul, and funk elements, delving into themes of depression, masculinity, and family trauma. In 2018, Lamar became the first rapper to win the Pulitzer Prize for Damn., praised for its vignettes on modern African American life.

Recent Highlights and Impact

In May 2024, Lamar released “Not Like Us,” part of a series of tracks targeting Drake amid a high-profile feud involving serious allegations. The song topped charts, becoming a West Coast anthem with its bass-heavy production and sharp lyrics, widely seen as a victory for Lamar.

Following his 2025 Grammy wins, Lamar headlined the Super Bowl halftime show, performing hits like “Humble” and “DNA,” and closing with “Not Like Us.” He later embarked on a tour with SZA, grossing over $350 million and selling more than 1.5 million tickets.

Lamar stands out for his commercial success without relying on frequent releases, blending artistry with cultural significance.
