Grammy Awards Mix-Up Goes Viral
The 2026 Grammy Awards concluded with an unexpected twist when music legend Cher mistakenly announced the late Luther Vandross as Record of the Year winner instead of actual recipient Kendrick Lamar. The 79-year-old icon’s onstage confusion sparked both laughter and social media frenzy during Sunday’s ceremony.
Chaotic Presentation Sequence
After accepting her lifetime achievement award, Cher initially began exiting the stage before host Trevor Noah recalled her to present the final trophy. “Thank you. I guess I’m supposed to walk off now. All right,” she remarked before opening the envelope containing the winner’s name.
The presentation took another awkward turn when Cher paused mid-announcement, explaining “They told me it was gonna be on the prompter.” Upon reading the card, she enthusiastically declared: “Luther Gandross!” – mispronouncing the late singer’s surname.
Social Media Erupts Over On-Stage Error
The moment immediately trended across platforms, with “Luther Vandross” becoming a top search term as viewers humorously noted the R&B legend passed away in 2005. One viral comment observed: “The crowd waiting for Luther Vandross to appear after Cher announced him…” while another joked: “Luther in heaven finding out he just won a Grammy.”
Kendrick Lamar graciously accepted the award for his track “luther” featuring SZA, which samples Vandross and Cheryl Lynn’s 1982 duet “If This World Were Mine.” Producer Sounwave opened the acceptance speech by acknowledging the moment: “Let’s give a shoutout to the late and great Luther Vandross.”
Tribute to Musical Legacy
Lamar, who called Vandross “one of my favorite artists of all time,” detailed the emotional clearance process for the sample: “When we got that clearance, we all dropped a tear because we know how much you and Cheryl poured into that record.” The win marked Lamar’s second consecutive Record of the Year victory and fifth trophy of the evening.
Known as “The Velvet Voice,” Vandross earned eight Grammys during his lifetime before passing away at age 54 in 2005. His career included collaborations with artists ranging from Beyoncé to David Bowie.
