Arsenal Consider Free Agent Market Amid Midfield Crisis

Mikel Arteta has neither confirmed nor denied rumors about a potential reunion with former Arsenal midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. The Gunners’ search for midfield reinforcements intensified following Mikel Merino’s season-ending foot fracture sustained during the recent Manchester United defeat.

Merino’s absence leaves a significant void in Arsenal’s midfield, having contributed six goals and three assists across 33 appearances this season. With the winter transfer window closing imminently, club officials are reportedly exploring free agent options available outside the registration period.

Oxlade-Chamberlain’s Arsenal Connection

The 32-year-old Oxlade-Chamberlain, currently without a club since leaving Besiktas in August, has maintained ties with his former team. Sources confirm the versatile midfielder has trained regularly at Arsenal’s Sobha Realty Training Centre since November and even featured in a closed-door U21 match against Manchester United in December.

When pressed about Oxlade-Chamberlain’s possible return during Monday’s press conference, Arteta stated: “We’re evaluating all possibilities to strengthen our squad.” The manager acknowledged the urgency of their situation, adding: “When you lose a key player with four months of crucial competitions remaining, you must explore every available option.”

Immediate Impact Required

Arteta emphasized the need for any potential signing to make an immediate contribution: “At this level, especially for four months, we need players who can adapt instantly and impact the team. Our current schedule demands quality depth with matches every few days.”

While Oxlade-Chamberlain remains a consideration, multiple midfield alternatives appear to be under review. Sources close to the club confirm an inquiry was made regarding Bayern Munich’s Leon Goretzka, whose contract expires in six months. The 30-year-old German international has made 28 appearances this season.

Reports also suggest intermediaries offered Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali to Arsenal officials, though no formal discussions are believed to have taken place between the clubs. Arsenal’s final decision on potential reinforcements is expected before the transfer deadline passes.
