Michael Dickson’s Path from AFL Draft Snub to Seahawks Super Bowl

Published on

Seattle Seahawks punter Michael Dickson stands one victory away from Super Bowl glory, capping a remarkable journey that began with rejection from Australian football drafts.

Early Days in Sydney

The 30-year-old Sydney native grew up in the city’s east and developed his skills through the Sydney Swans Academy. As a teenager, he shared the field with current Swans captain Callum Mills and vice-captain Isaac Heeney. Despite his talent as a defender, Dickson went undrafted in both the AFL national and rookie lists.

Switch to American Football

In 2015, Dickson relocated to Melbourne and joined Prokick Australia, a program directed by former AFL player Nathan Chapman that trains aspiring punters and kickers. His versatile kicking ability quickly attracted scouts from the University of Texas, earning him a scholarship with the Longhorns.

Dickson signed his first NFL contract with the Seahawks in 2018. Last year, he secured a four-year, $23.25 million extension through 2029, establishing him as the league’s highest-paid punter—far surpassing top AFL salaries of around $1.5 million.

Praise from Mentors

Chapman highlights Dickson’s dedication: “Michael works on his craft relentlessly. He has been with a team that has really backed him, and he has delivered. It’s actually a great story. He can do it all. His ability to do so many different kicks so well—spiral, high, to the right—has been next level.”

AFL legend Paul Roos, who coached Dickson as a junior and remains in touch, recalls his potential: “He was a really talented (AFL) player when he was a kid, but he was small.” Roos notes Dickson’s “beautiful kick” made his NFL success unsurprising.

Inspiration from Fellow Aussies

Dickson aims to follow Jordan Mailata, the former South Sydney Rabbitohs player who won the Super Bowl with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2025. Another Australian, Jesse Williams, earned a ring with the Seahawks in 2013, though injury sidelined him from playing.

The Seahawks face the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl on February 9, with kickoff at 10:30 a.m. AEDT. Dickson’s precise punts have proven vital in Seattle’s playoff run, making him a fan favorite and key asset.
