Woolworths reintroduces its popular reusable shopping bag in a compact mini version, following the rapid sell-out of the original release across Australia. The retailer partners with designer Anya Hindmarch, creator of the iconic Universal Bag, to offer the eco-friendly tote at more than 400 stores nationwide.
New Mini Bag Hits Stores
Last year’s limited-edition green tote, priced at $20, vanished from shelves in record time during Hindmarch’s first Australian collaboration. Coles saw similar demand for its version months later. Now, the luxury British brand launches a $15 mini bag in two color options, ideal for everyday use.
“It’s a great everyday size; I find mine useful for office lunches on the go,” Ms Hindmarch states. She notes huge demand for the smaller size since the initial launch and expresses delight in partnering with Woolworths for nationwide availability in main and metro stores.
Sustainability Drives Partnership
Woolworths chose to collaborate with Hindmarch, who started The Universal Bag in 2021, to promote sustainable shopping choices after the 2025 success. “Our customers absolutely loved the bag we launched last year, and it’s wonderful to still see them being used in our aisles every day,” says Rhonda Ma, Category Manager at Woolworths.
Ma highlights the mini bag’s versatility: “It’s a great size for a quick shop, a chic lunch tote, or even a stylish way to carry your tech.” The bags arrive in stores this week, and shoppers should act fast based on past frenzy.
Affordable Luxury Alternative
Shoulder bags from the British label typically cost up to £1695 (about $A3400), making the $15 supermarket edition a bargain. Unlike last year, ample stock ensures most shoppers can purchase one.
“Demand at launch was incredible. This is a product designed to fulfill a need at an accessible price point,” Ms Hindmarch explains. She addresses concerns over partnering with a British designer: “The most successful sustainable projects are also commercially viable, covering costs like research, development, and production for long-term impact.”
Shopper Excitement Builds
Social media buzzes with anticipation. Shoppers rave about the original’s durability and capacity, with many planning to snag the mini. One user urges others to “run, not walk” to stores.
Global Universal Bag Impact
The Universal Bag promotes industry change through collaborations with major retailers, offering desirable, durable, 100% recycled and recyclable totes with a 10-year guarantee. Exclusive versions align with each brand’s identity while advancing sustainability.
Available at UK chains like Asda, Co-op, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, Waitrose, Selfridges Food Hall, and Whole Foods UK, plus stores in Hong Kong, Japan, and Singapore. “The Mini with Woolworths is our 28th global edition,” Hindmarch shares. The project has saved over 430 tonnes of virgin plastic—equivalent to 260 standard cars—driving lasting alternatives to single-use bags.
