Barnoldswick Town suffered a 3-0 defeat at home to Irlam on Tuesday night at Silentnight Beds Stadium. Despite playing on familiar turf, the hosts struggled against the play-off contenders, who dominated from the outset.
League Struggles and Cup Focus
Barnoldswick sit fifth from bottom in the league, with a significant buffer above the relegation zone. They have not secured a league victory since a 2-0 win over Prestwich Heys on December 20, leaving their campaign drifting. Attention now turns to the West Riding County Cup, where they host Tadcaster Albion in next month’s semi-final. Several league fixtures precede that clash, offering a chance to build momentum.
First Half Action
Irlam took control early. John Johnston missed a promising opportunity, but Ethan Cartwright opened the scoring after 18 minutes. Johnston faced a strong save from goalkeeper Dale Latham and defender Louis Jeanne soon after. Owen Anderson’s timely tackle prevented a second goal, while Irlam headed over from a good position on the half-hour mark.
Adam Hampshire fired wide from 25 yards for Barnoldswick, and Johnston fluffed a close-range chance. The hosts nearly equalized just before halftime, striking the post and soaring the rebound over the bar.
Second Half Drama
Barnoldswick carried momentum into the second half and came close to leveling after 47 minutes. Gareth Hill flicked on for brother and captain Andy Hill, but Elliot Wynne produced an outstanding save.
Irlam responded swiftly, doubling their lead through Josh Wood’s header from a set-piece. They struck the bar on a counter, while Barnoldswick threatened again as the Hill brothers linked with Jesse Hailwood, only for Wynne to deny him.
Johnston sealed the victory late on, exploiting a defender’s slip to round Latham and tap into an empty net. Irlam preserved their clean sheet with two clearances off the line in the closing stages.
Upcoming Fixtures
Barnoldswick host FC Isle of Man this weekend. A victory would lift them above their visitors in the standings.
