Australia’s Cooper Woods has secured the nation’s first gold medal at the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics with a remarkable comeback in the men’s moguls event.
From Near Elimination to Olympic Glory
Woods, a 25-year-old skier from Merimbula, New South Wales, entered the final outside the top 10 after placing 15th in qualifying, earning the last run under intense pressure. He delivered a flawless performance, tying the score with moguls legend Mikael Kingsbury, widely considered the greatest in the sport. Woods clinched gold thanks to a superior turn score of 48.4 compared to Kingsbury’s 47.7.
This victory marks Australia’s seventh Winter Olympics gold, joining icons like Steven Bradbury, Alisa Camplin, Dale Begg-Smith, Torah Bright, Lydia Lassila, and Jakara Anthony. Many compare Woods’ turnaround to Bradbury’s famous 2002 Salt Lake City triumph, dubbed the ‘accidental hero’ win.
The Key to Recovery
After a disappointing first qualifier, Woods consulted his sports psychologist for a pivotal session. “After qualification one I had a pretty deep meeting with my sports psychologist and I just felt pretty lost as an athlete,” Woods said. “I felt like I skied my heart out in that first qualifier and we actually talked about, ‘Oh, what happens if we turn it around in a couple of days?'”
Mentored by Wallabies legend John Eales, Woods credited lifelong sacrifices for his success. “I am Cooper Woods and I’m an Olympic champion. Let’s go,” he declared post-win. “I have no words. The highs and the lows, the injuries and the setbacks, the time away from family and away from home – all that sacrifice has been for this little thing.”
Team Celebrations and Legacy
Fellow Australian moguls skier and flag bearer Matt Graham embraced Woods after the historic win. “He deserves this. He’s worked so hard,” Graham stated. “The whole team has worked hard. It’s a win for Cooper and for the team. It’s a win for Australia.”
Woods’ achievement elevates moguls as Australia’s top Winter Olympics discipline. The Milano Cortina Games continue through February 22.
