Charli XCX reveals she has come close to experiencing the emotional breakdown her on-screen alter-ego endures in her latest film, The Moment. The singer, known for her bold persona, portrays an exaggerated version of herself in this mockumentary.
Film Plot and Charli’s Preparation
In The Moment, Charli XCX grapples with staying authentic to her artistry or succumbing to commercial pressures. A menacing director, played by Alexander Skarsgård, arrives to film her upcoming Brat tour concert, pushing her to her limits.
Following the film’s premiere at the Berlin Film Festival, Charli XCX stated, “I’ve been training to play this role my entire life in ways, very Method from the day I was born.”
At a press conference, she added, “And I’ve definitely reacted in ways like how I react in the film. Have I had a breakdown in the back of a Viano while smoking a million cigarettes? Yes. So I definitely had a lot to draw on.”
Festival Premiere and Release Details
The film debuted at the Sundance Film Festival last month and has opened in the US. It arrives in Europe next month after its Berlin showcase.
Charli XCX praised the Berlin International Film Festival, noting it “doesn’t shy away from political films, from films that have a real social angle, films by directors who really are visionary and have something to say.” She continued, “Those are the kinds of films that we love and want to champion ourselves. I’m only just starting out in this industry, but I feel passionate about working within those spaces.”
End of the Brat Era
The film’s release signals the conclusion of Charli XCX’s Brat era, which launched with her 2024 album. She explained, “For me, it’s over. And you can’t dread the end when it’s over.”
In the story, her character rejects Brat to move forward, mirroring the album campaign’s finale.
Star-Studded Cast Highlights
The ensemble features Kylie Jenner as herself. Charli XCX commended Jenner, saying, “Kylie was just phenomenal. She totally got the assignment. She is a really great actress.”
Jenner has actively promoted the film, attending its Beverly Hills premiere and posting on Instagram: “the moment!!! can’t wait to see u at the movies xx la and ny tickets on sale now <3.”
