Cynthia Erivo Overwhelmed at Dracula One-Woman Show Premiere

Published on

Cynthia Erivo fought back tears during the curtain call at the opening night of her one-woman adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula at London’s Noel Coward Theatre on Tuesday.

Powerful Performance and Emotional Response

The 39-year-old actress, known for her role in Wicked, portrays Dracula alongside 22 other characters in this innovative production. Following the press performance, she appeared moved by the audience’s applause, bowing proudly with the support crew. Erivo displayed toned arms in a black vest top, complemented by stage makeup including faux blood on her forehead.

Star-Studded Support

Florence Pugh, 30, arrived in a chic high-neck black velvet dress, joined by Lizzie Cundy, Myleene Klass, and Lady Victoria Hervey. Erivo’s mother, Edith, also attended to cheer her on. After the show, Erivo departed in a striking all-red ensemble with matching boots and bag, waving to fans gathered outside.

Addressing Early Criticism

Just last week, some early viewers criticized the production for apparent use of teleprompters and technical glitches. Disappointed theatre-goers shared their views on social media platforms like Reddit and West End forums. One wrote: “I saw it last night and was SO disappointed… I left frustrated at spending £70 on a ticket.”

Another echoed: “Same, I tried so hard to get into it and I just couldn’t.” A third noted: “On my night there were technical issues… Cynthia was struggling with remembering her lines… it was disappointing.”

These previews highlighted challenges typical of a new run, with expectations that refinements will enhance future shows.

Striking Visuals and West End Legacy

Erivo’s first official production image features her in a gothic red wig with finger waves, fangs, and signature acrylic nails, a far cry from her Wicked character. A West End veteran, she debuted in The Umbrellas of Cherbourg in 2011, earned an Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Musical in The Color Purple in 2013, and secured a Tony for the Broadway revival in 2016.

The production arrives as Erivo seeks acclaim following mixed reactions to the Wicked press tour and no Oscar nods for her Elphaba role, despite the film’s positive reception.
