Thunder Bay Braces for 10-20 cm More Snow After 30 cm Dump

The Thunder Bay region in northwestern Ontario faces continued winter battering, with forecasts predicting another 10 to 20 centimetres of snow arriving by Saturday afternoon.

Current Snowfall Warning

A snowfall warning now covers Thunder Bay, Nipigon, Rossport, Armstrong, and Beardmore. The alert notes, “A band of snowfall is expected to slowly move westward across the area. There is some uncertainty with the westward extent of this band.” Thunder Bay, Raith, and areas to the west could see reduced amounts. Officials warn that travel on Highways 11 and 17 may face disruptions.

Recent Heavy Snowfall

This new system follows intense snowfall over the past two days, totaling up to 30 centimetres in the area. Observation stations southwest of Thunder Bay International Airport and near Silver Harbour recorded 24 to 32 centimetres. The storm originated over Montana and swept into the Canadian prairies, delivering heavy snow and winds to Manitoba and Saskatchewan communities.

Snow Clearing Challenges

City officials report a tough week for snow removal operations. Thunder Bay accumulated over 20 centimetres in the last 24 hours alone. “Strong winds and significant drifting in many areas have created challenging travel conditions in some parts of the city,” states a city update.

Crews continue plowing streets and sidewalks, using snow blowers where deep accumulations demand it. “As snowfall continues, crews will continue to monitor conditions and conduct additional plowing as required. The significant accumulation also requires the use of snow blower equipment in some areas, which increases the time needed to complete service,” the update adds.

Residents can track progress via an online map launched earlier this month, showing nearly 40 snowplows in real time.

Schools Remain Open

Despite the snow, Student Transportation Services deemed roads passable Friday morning. School buses operated normally across rural and urban routes.
