Central and southern Saskatchewan experience a slight warmup Saturday afternoon following hazardous wind chills overnight. A yellow weather alert for extreme cold in the region lifted just before noon, while cold weather alerts persist in northern areas including Uranium City and Stony Rapids.
Overnight Conditions
Wind chills plunged to as low as –42 in central and southern spots such as Prince Albert, Saskatoon, Regina, and Estevan. Key Lake, located 575 kilometres north of Saskatoon, recorded the province’s lowest temperature at around –34 C overnight.
Weekend Outlook
Temperatures stay chilly through the weekend until Monday morning, though conditions moderate Saturday afternoon across most areas. Keane Kokolsky, an operational meteorologist, notes that the worst appears over, but colder wind chills could return Saturday evening—though not reaching previous hazardous levels.
An Arctic high-pressure system builds over the southern Prairies, extending from the Northwest Territories to the United States. Warmer air arrives next week, but it falls short of springlike conditions.
Short-Term Warm Spells
Southern regions near Assiniboia and Rockglen see higher temperatures Monday, but a trailing cold front limits the relief. Parts of the province may warm briefly again by Thursday, though this respite proves short-lived as well.
