Sanchez Slammed as ‘Stupid’ in Chelsea’s Late Burnley Draw

Published on

Chelsea surrendered a lead once again, settling for a frustrating 1-1 draw against Burnley after Zian Flemming’s injury-time header.

Early Promise Fades

Joao Pedro fired Chelsea ahead in the fourth minute, extending his strong scoring streak and setting the stage for what appeared to be a straightforward victory. Burnley struggled to respond, but Chelsea failed to capitalize, allowing the visitors to snatch a point at the death.

Wesley Fofana received a second yellow card for a late challenge on James Ward-Prowse, leaving Chelsea with 10 men. Despite four central defenders on the pitch during the equalizer, none tracked Flemming as he rose to meet Ward-Prowse’s corner.

Goalkeeper Sanchez Draws Sharp Criticism

Robert Sanchez faced heavy backlash for a pivotal error in the 85th minute. After securing the ball, the goalkeeper chose a risky long clearance toward Pedro, who was visibly hampered by cramp, instead of running down the clock.

Jamie O’Hara, speaking alongside Jason Cundy, labeled the decision ‘stupid’ and non-league quality. ‘How old is Sanchez? He’s not young, he’s got plenty of experience,’ O’Hara said. ‘In the 85th minute, the ball comes to him. All you do, go down. Hold onto it. What does he do? He boots it straight to a Burnley player, and they’re back on it.’

O’Hara added: ‘That ain’t about being young, that’s about being stupid! You get hold of it, you go down, get the team up and then you boot it into the corner. That stuff is where Chelsea are just ridiculous all the time. It’s like non-league stuff.’

Cundy concurred: ‘Catch it, go down, kill the clock. He boots it to Joao Pedro, who’s pulling up with cramp. What’s he going to do? It’s 3v1.’

Manager Addresses Defensive Lapses

Liam Rosenior pinpointed broader issues beyond Fofana’s dismissal. ‘That wasn’t on Wesley. That was on our performance,’ he stated. ‘From the first goal, we lacked incision when we had control. We were too safe in possession.’

Rosenior highlighted vulnerabilities to set pieces with Ward-Prowse on the field. ‘We knew their biggest threat was set plays. We went as big as we possibly could because that was the only way they could score with 10 men. We still don’t see it out.’

The result echoes Chelsea’s prior collapse from 2-0 up against Leeds at home, underscoring ongoing disciplinary and game-management struggles. ‘We’ve set fire to four points from two home games. It’s not good enough for a club of this level,’ Rosenior admitted. ‘I’m learning about the players you can lean on when things aren’t going your way. That’s something we need to address very quickly.’
