Coronation Street Actress Hits Rock Bottom
Lucy Fallon, the 30-year-old actress known for portraying Bethany Platt on Coronation Street, shares that she spent five weeks as an inpatient at The Priory psychiatric hospital following a severe mental health crisis. She describes reaching ‘absolute rock bottom,’ a point where envisioning any future felt impossible.
Fallon explains her long-standing insecurities intensified during the 2020 lockdown. After departing the ITV soap in March 2020 following five years on the show, work opportunities vanished amid pandemic restrictions. She returned to the role in 2023.
Struggles Leading to Hospitalization
‘From quite young, I’ve always struggled. I’ve always been quite insecure. That got worse when we went through lockdown because I left Corrie and I wasn’t really getting any work,’ Fallon states on the Secure the Insecure podcast.
By late 2020, her condition deteriorated sharply. ‘I was just at the absolute rock bottom that I’ve ever felt. And I really struggled. I had a really bad bout of mental health and ended up in The Priory for about five weeks because my mental health was so bad. I couldn’t see a way out.’
The Priory, a private facility in southwest London, offers inpatient care costing over £7,000 weekly. Notable past patients include celebrities like Robbie Williams and Amy Winehouse.
Reluctant Admission and Path to Recovery
Engaged to Preston North End footballer Ryan Ledson, 28, Fallon shares son Sonny, three, and daughter Nancy, 13 months. She clarifies the decision to seek treatment came from family and former colleagues, not herself. ‘I really didn’t want to go,’ she recalls.
Initially, the environment felt alien. ‘At first, I didn’t feel like I was bad enough to be there.’ Within a week, however, she adjusted and felt safe, forming lasting connections with others there.
Discharge proved challenging. Prescribed medication—now discontinued—Fallon returned to her parents’ home for support. ‘Coming out and being in the real world felt strange. But I had a good support system.’
Rebuilding Life and Family Milestones
Meeting Ledson on the dating app Raya marked a turning point. Despite lingering insecurities and past ‘baggage,’ Fallon embraced happiness. She credits stability post-treatment for her progress.
A 2022 miscarriage brought devastation. ‘I felt like everybody else could just carry on, and I felt stuck.’ Quick subsequent pregnancies led to Sonny’s birth, reframing the loss positively, followed by Nancy in January 2025. Ledson proposed on her 30th birthday in November 2025.
Return to Coronation Street and Current Outlook
Fallon resumed her role as Bethany on New Year’s Eve 2023. Today, she reports feeling more content than ever, despite occasional low days. ‘Mentally, I feel very content… I’ve got myself together.’
She acknowledges motherhood’s challenges: ‘Sometimes I’ll wake up and think, how am I supposed to look after two children all day?’ Yet, gratitude prevails for her recovery journey.
