Historical Design Innovation
TikTok creator Alex Ma, who specializes in uncovering clothing facts, explains its purpose in a video that has surpassed six million views. The design dates back to 1926, when Russell Athletic developed the sweatshirt football jersey.
Football players previously wore wool jerseys that absorbed sweat during intense activity, becoming heavy and unpleasant. Washing caused further shrinkage. The new cotton jersey addressed sweat management with the V-shaped panel placed precisely where moisture gathers first—at the upper chest and collarbone.
The separate panel of fabric absorbs moisture in that high-sweat area without soaking the entire front of the garment, Alex states.
This panel also enhances flexibility, allowing the neckline to stretch comfortably when pulling the jumper over the head.
Today’s Decorative Trend
Modern versions rarely serve the original function. Most V-panels match the surrounding fabric or consist of mere stitching for aesthetic appeal.
You will see what looks like a V-panel, but it is not actually functional. Usually, it is the same fabric as the rest of the sweatshirt, just with extra fabric stitched on top. It doesn’t provide any extra stretch; it’s purely aesthetic, Alex adds.
