Struber Frustrated by Bristol City’s Final-Third Issues in Watford Loss

Published on

Gerhard Struber highlighted Bristol City’s poor decision-making and lack of readiness in the final third as his main frustration following their 2-1 defeat to Watford. The manager described the loss as painful for players, staff, and supporters alike.

Match Recap

Bristol City missed a chance to narrow the play-off gap to one point after falling to Watford at Ashton Gate. Luca Kjerrumgaard opened the scoring in the seventh minute with a close-range finish, putting the visitors ahead early. Scott Twine equalized before halftime, heading in Adam Randell’s cross for his 10th league goal of the season.

The Robins dominated after the break but failed to find a winner. Jeremy Ngakia sealed the victory for Watford with a stunning long-range strike into the top corner, sparking celebrations among away fans.

Struber’s Post-Match Analysis

“This was the missing link,” Struber said after the game. “Performance-wise, we controlled most of the match against a strong transition side. We stopped their transitions quickly in the first half, but the conceded goal was cheap. In big moments, we lacked sharpness.”

He added that the team generated sufficient entries into the box and chances but faltered in the final decisions. “We were not always ready, and this is the big frustration today.”

Play-Off Implications and Home Form

This marks Bristol City’s 13th Championship defeat this season, with seven occurring at home—worse than 14 other teams. The play-off gap stands at four points but could widen to seven depending on Saturday results, including Wrexham versus Charlton Athletic.

Watford’s triumph lifts them to seventh place, one point ahead of Bristol City with 11 games remaining. Struber acknowledged fan frustration, stating, “Our feeling is really bad today—disappointing and flat. I understand every fan, especially after a good performance yielding nothing. This is painful for everyone.”

On home form, he emphasized, “We must improve at home—be stronger, clearer, with better decision-making, especially when dominating. We need a better outcome.”
