The jury in the Janson Baker double-murder trial remains sequestered as deliberations extend into a fourth day at the Moncton Law Courts.
Trial Timeline and Key Events
Justice Cameron Gunn informed the court at 8 p.m. on Saturday that the jury felt tired and needed to retire to their hotel for the night. The panel returned to the courthouse on Sunday, but no verdict has emerged as of mid-afternoon.
Baker faces two counts of first-degree murder for the shooting deaths of Bernard and Rose-Marie Saulnier, who were killed inside their Dieppe home on September 7, 2019. Authorities arrested and charged Baker exactly four years later.
Courtroom Atmosphere
Members of the Saulnier family have frequently entered and exited the courthouse throughout the weekend. Baker’s family members have also maintained a strong presence during proceedings.
On Saturday, jurors completed listening to audio recordings from one of the prosecution’s key witnesses, whose identity remains protected by a publication ban. The playback ended shortly after 3 p.m., after which the jury stayed sequestered.
