Hilary Duff shares that Cameron Diaz and Benji Madden opened their Beverly Crest mansion to her family during the devastating Los Angeles wildfires, providing temporary refuge after evacuation from their Beverly Hills home.
Scale of the 2025 Southern California Wildfires
Fourteen wildfires burned across Southern California from January 7 to 31, 2025, claiming 440 lives, displacing over 200,000 residents, and destroying more than 18,000 structures. Among the celebrities who lost homes were Mel Gibson, Jeff Bridges, Anna Faris, Cary Elwes, Anthony Hopkins, John Goodman, Eugene Levy, Steve Guttenberg, Matt Damon, Billy Crystal, Jhené Aiko, Tyra Banks, Harvey Guillén, Candy Spelling, and Milo Ventimiglia, as well as couples Adam Brody and Leighton Meester, and Ed Harris and Amy Madigan.
Authorities arrested former Uber driver Jonathan Rinderknecht for arson in the Lachman Fire, which merged into the Palisades Fire. He faces a federal trial on April 21 for three charges.
Diaz and Madden’s Act of Kindness
Duff, her husband Matthew Koma, their three daughters—Banks, 7, Mae, 4, and Townes, 21 months—plus Duff’s son Luca, 14, from her previous marriage, evacuated their $3.85 million five-bedroom Beverly Hills residence. They joined three dogs and chickens at Diaz and Madden’s $16.5 million seven-bedroom, eight-bathroom property.
On The Drew Barrymore Show, the 38-year-old actress recounted, “Your dear friend Cam, they were lovely enough to let our entire family stay in their house. And three dogs and chickens… Matt and I, the tension. We had been kicked out of our house and the fires were just everywhere.”
The 53-year-old Back in Action star and 46-year-old Good Charlotte guitarist, parents to daughter Raddix, 6, and son Cardinal, nearly 2, also own a $12.67 million Montecito estate and a $9.5 million Chelsea condo. Host Drew Barrymore praised, “They’re the best people.”
Family Strain During Evacuation
Tensions peaked when Duff and Koma argued at the Diaz home, culminating in her throwing his phone into a bougainvillea bush. “You guys, it was a bougainvillea and I was so proud of myself because those are sharp,” she recalled. “I was like, ‘Go fishing off the balcony.'”
Duff met the 38-year-old music producer in 2013 while working on her album Breathe In. Breathe Out., though still married to ex-husband Mike Comrie. They wed in 2017 after her 2016 divorce.
Duff’s Family Milestones and Career Surge
In 2024, Duff announced her final pregnancy on the show: “That’s it! His tubes got tied. He got snipped before, I like to call it fixed, like a dog. He got fixed before I had the baby.”
She collaborated with Koma on her sixth studio album, Luck… or Something, debuting at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 chart dated March 7. Tearfully, she shared, “He’s the best to work with ever and it was such a healing experience… I felt so taken care of by him. It was so selfless he was like, ‘Let’s just make this for you.'”
Duff launches her first world tour in nearly 20 years, the 57-date The Lucky Me Tour, on June 21-22 at iTHINK Financial Amphitheatre in West Palm Beach, Florida. Openers include La Roux, Lauren Spencer Smith, and Jade LeMac. She wraps a sold-out Las Vegas residency at Voltaire in The Venetian Resort on May 22-24.
The star, known for Disney’s Lizzie McGuire (2001-2004) and its 2003 film, draws 4.4 million monthly Spotify listeners.
