F-22 Raptors at RAF Lakenheath Hint at US Middle East Deployment

Published on

Plane spotters at RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk spotted rare F-22 Raptor stealth fighters overhead, viewing the sightings as a major clue to escalating US military activity in the Middle East.

Rare Sightings Spark Speculation

Ian Bowskill, a 73-year-old aviation enthusiast from Bedfordshire, described watching four F-22 Raptors take off as “like hitting the jackpot.” He noted the base serves as a key staging point for deployments to the region.

“We don’t know if they will go to the Middle East, or whether they’re here just in case, but to see four taking off today is what we’ve all been hoping for,” Bowskill stated. “This is the staging post for Mr Trump’s forces to deploy to the Middle East. They always said the UK was the biggest aircraft carrier off of Europe and this just proves it.”

F-22 Raptors rank among the world’s most advanced fighters, rarely appearing in the UK and signaling heightened US readiness for conflict.

Enthusiasts Gather at the Base

Hundreds of aviation fans converge weekly at a designated viewing area near the airbase, peering over a 10-foot fence topped with barbed wire. Dedicated spotters arrive with tracking equipment and radios, while families and retirees observe from vehicles. Some climb trees or use ladders for optimal views.

Bowskill traveled over 70 miles with friend Paul Langshaw, 68, to witness the action. “I’ve got no problem with the US using the base whatsoever, but I think Trump was daft to start it in the first place, absolute nutcase if you ask me,” he added.

Michael Runham, 46, from East Sussex, drives two-and-a-half hours regularly and noticed increased arrivals. “I had a feeling this was about to start a few weeks back because the planes were arriving here from the US in large numbers,” Runham said.

Gemma Aspland, 43, shares live videos on TikTok to thousands of followers but avoids geopolitical talk. “When we’re live on TikTok, we avoid discussing the conflict or where the planes are heading. We’re mindful of the people flying those jets and the families they’re leaving behind,” she explained.

Regional Conflict Disrupts Travel

US and Israeli strikes on Iran have stranded hundreds of thousands, prompting evacuations and widespread airport closures across the Middle East and beyond. Evacuation operations continue amid severe flight disruptions.
