A devoted Manchester United supporter, Frank Ilett—better known online as The United Strand—shares humorous strategies to maintain his fame once the team finally secures five straight victories, ending his long-standing haircut challenge.
The Haircut Challenge Unfolds
Ilett began growing out his hair in October 2024, pledging to keep it uncut until Manchester United wins five games consecutively. The club struggled during this period, but came close last month with four successive triumphs under interim manager Michael Carrick. United drew at West Ham in the fifth match, sparing Ilett a trim for now.
With only nine games left in the season, Ilett expresses confidence in Carrick’s leadership to conclude his vow. He already prepares for a shorter hairstyle in a lighthearted video produced with bookmaker Paddy Power.
Satirical Video Features Viral Stars
The skit depicts Ilett attending a mock lecture called “How to Diversify Your Viral Momentum,” joined by fellow internet sensations like Gordon Hill, the Wealdstone Raider, and others.
Entering the hall, Ilett declares: “When Man United get those five wins in a row, that’s curtains for me. I need to stay relevant and diversify my brand, and to do that, I’m going to need help.”
The instructor mocks Ilett’s “big stupid clown hair” before the group recites their signature catchphrases. The Wealdstone Raider now claims to author erotic novels, highlighting their evolutions.
Urged to reveal his “real self,” Ilett unzips his shirt to expose thick chest hair. Reactions pour in: Guy Goma, famous for a mistaken BBC News interview in 2006, exclaims, “What is that? Right, I’m off,” and exits. One of the tight-jeans meme stars—Jamie Philips, Connor Humpage, Kevin Rooney, or Alex Lacey—quips, “I’m going to be sick on my chinos.”
Other attendees include Danny Andrews, known from a 2007 documentary on his fish-and-rice-cake diet.
Bookmaker’s Take and Manager’s Response
A Paddy Power spokesperson notes: “Frank’s become a household name thanks to his non-haircut pledge and Manchester United’s past struggles, but with the team turning the corner under Michael Carrick, we wanted to lend a hand and ensure he’s future-proofing his career in the online meme world. As his fellow viral stars have shown, it’s vital to change up your act to remain fresh. However, his radical approach to body hair isn’t for everyone. Let’s hope he doesn’t wait for five-straight wins for that to come off—we might be waiting for years.”
Carrick addressed the fan’s stunt in a pre-match press conference before the West Ham draw: “I can say I’m aware of it, yeah. My kids have made me aware of it, if anything, but it certainly won’t go into the team talk from a professional level. I can understand what’s going on with it and it does make me smile, but it won’t have an impact ultimately in the end.”
