Greg James Completes Day 1 of 1000km Comic Relief Tandem Bike Ride

Greg James, the 40-year-old Radio 1 Breakfast DJ, has successfully completed the first day of his grueling 1000km tandem bike ride from Weymouth in Dorset to Edinburgh for Comic Relief. Despite cycling solo, he credits his rigorous training to binge-watching the steamy series Heated Rivalry and blasting Harry Styles’ new single Aperture, alongside upbeat tracks from The Chemical Brothers.

Training Fueled by Entertainment

James began intensive preparation around Christmas, logging thousands of miles either outdoors or on a stationary bike. “I’ve been training really hard on my bicycle from about Christmas, and every day has been leg day. It’s been a f***ing nightmare. But it’s all for a good cause and totally worth it,” he shared.

He added, “I’ve done thousands of miles, either out in the real world or on a bike in the spare room with a laptop propped up watching Heated Rivalry. The song I just can’t stop listening to is Aperture by Harry Styles. I’ve also got a lot of Chemical Brothers because that’s just nice, upbeat, good dance music.”

Vernon Kay, Sara Cox, Jo Whiley, and Scott Mills are among those cheering him on, while Jamie Laing and Mollie King provide tips from their own endurance challenges.

Push Continues Amid Family Health Scare

The effort follows a difficult week for James, whose father, known as ‘big Al,’ suffered a stroke during a planned heart operation last Thursday. James skipped his Friday radio show to support his family but returned Monday, confirming his father remains in serious condition yet “still with us.”

“Thank you to Sam and Danni for Friday, as there was a slight mishap with my dad. My dad’s not very well at the minute. I know that he would want me to get back on the show. And he’s still with us, which is good!” James told listeners. He described his father as “fighting hard” and progressing in “small steps” toward recovery.

In a candid video update, James opened up: “I’ve had a terrible time. My dad’s not very well. Not very well at all. And it’s horrible.” He explained hosting his show Thursday as a welcome distraction, only to learn later that the surgery had complications, leading to the stroke.

James spent the weekend visiting his father in intensive care, expressing gratitude to NHS staff. “Particularly the handsome doctor that he’s having by his bedside,” he noted, highlighting family WhatsApp banter as a brief relief amid the ordeal.

Undeterred, James presses forward with the Red Nose Day challenge, balancing personal trials with his commitment to charity.
