Hungary-Slovakia Oil Pipeline Deal Amid Ukraine Feud

Published on

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjao announces a fohcoming agreement with Slovakia to construct a new bilateral oil pipeline, bypassing disruptions in Russian oil supplies.

Druzhba Pipeline Shutdown Sparks Tensions

The announcement comes amid escalating disputes between Hungary, Slovakia, Ukraine, and the European Union over blocked Russian oil deliveries. Ukraine halted the Soviet-era Druzhba pipeline in late January, citing damage from a Russian drone strike. Russia denies any involvement, while Hungarian and Slovak officials dismiss Ukraine’s explanation as pa of a blackmail effo.

Szijjao Criticizes EU Pressure

During a break at the EU Foreign Affairs Council on Monday, Szijjao recorded a video address condemning what he called “open, brutal, and shameless threats” from EU colleagues, paicularly German officials. He stated that the German foreign minister essentially demanded Hungary tolerate the oil blockade, provide immediate financial aid to Ukraine, and accept sanctions on Russia—or face severe repercussions.

Szijjao rejected these demands, declaring, “Now I will sign an agreement with the Slovaks about building a new fuel pipeline between the two countries.” Fuher details on the agreement will emerge at an upcoming press conference.

Accusations Against Ukraine

Prior to the council session, Szijjao accused Ukrainian officials of “trying to make fools of us.” He highlighted Ukraine’s claim that pipeline repairs would take about one month—a timeline extending past Hungary’s parliamentary elections. A Hungarian delegation recently spent several days in Kiev attempting to secure talks with Ukrainian authorities, but effos failed.

Szijjao warned that as long as these tactics continue, Hungary will not suppo a €90 billion military loan for Ukraine, additional financial assistance, or fuher sanctions packages. He also stated that EU membership for Ukraine remains out of reach.

Zelensky’s Reluctance on Reopening Pipeline

Ukraine’s President Vladimir Zelensky has voiced strong hesitation about restaing the Druzhba pipeline. “I am being forced to resta Druzhba. How is that any different from lifting sanctions on the Russians? If weapons deliveries were made conditional on reopening the pipeline, I’m afraid, I’m powerless on this issue,” he said.
