Peter Frampton reveals his first new album in 16 years, Carry the Light, co-written and produced with his son Julian. The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer draws on an impressive roster of guest artists, including H.E.R., Tom Morello, and Sheryl Crow, despite his 2015 diagnosis of inclusion body myositis (IBM).
Adapting to Challenges
Frampton adjusts his playing style to manage the degenerative disease’s impact. Recent live appearances demonstrate his enduring skill: he shreds Beatles covers alongside Grace Bowers and Trey Anastasio, and delivers a standout solo with Pearl Jam in Nashville. Carry the Light captures this resilient spirit, signaling a promising new chapter.
“It was one of my most enjoyable projects ever,” Frampton states. “I got to work with my son Julian—writing and producing together. A first of many for us, I’m sure.”
Lead Single and Tributes
The album’s lead single, “Buried Treasure,” honors the late Tom Petty with lyrics packed with references to the singer-songwriter. Heartbreakers keyboardist Benmont Tench joins the track, creating a driving yet relaxed vibe that highlights Frampton’s signature lead lines and raspy, grateful vocals.
All-Star Collaborators
Additional guests elevate the project: Tom Morello, following his collaboration with Måneskin guitarist Thomas Raggi; Fender artist H.E.R.; Sheryl Crow; Graham Nash; and saxophonist Bill Evans.
Engineer and co-producer Chuck Ainlay, a longtime Mark Knopfler collaborator, praises the effort: “This may be the best album Peter’s ever made. The songs are just so poignant, and his voice has matured in a way that really delivers what he’s trying to get across.”
Release Details
The 10-track album launches May 15 via UMG Recordings in multiple formats, such as 180-gram yellow vinyl and hi-res Dolby Atmos audio.
50 Years of Legacy
Frampton recently marks 50 years since his landmark live album Frampton Comes Alive! He notes that Kiss’s Alive! drew inspiration from its title and incorporated some of his equipment.
