Greg James ‘Depleted and Teary’ on Day 7 of Red Nose Day Bike Challenge

Published on

Radio 1 DJ Greg James resumes his tandem bike endurance challenge on day seven, revealing he feels “depleted” and “teary” as the emotional strain intensifies ahead of the final push.

Emotional Challenges Mount

James shared his feelings during a recent broadcast, noting the toll of sidelining personal matters for the fundraiser. “I feel quite teary today,” he said. “Everything is bubbling up a little bit—I’ve had to put everything to one side for ages to get ready for this.”

He recounted a conversation with his mother about his father, who suffered a stroke three weeks ago. “I haven’t spoken to dad in ages. I haven’t had a proper conversation with him in three weeks because he’s had a stroke,” James explained. “And I was like, ‘What’s happening? Is his brain muddled?'”

Producer Amy reassured him on air: “We had a lovely chat. Alan’s doing very well. And we spoke about WhatsApp voicenotes and how it works for a little bit.” James reflected, “That’s dad doing dad things… Everything is a lot. And I genuinely have been cheered up by all of this, but I’m pretty done.”

Jamie Laing’s Lingerie Forfeit Looms

Listeners face a fundraising target: raise an additional £150,000 by 9:30 a.m. to see Jamie Laing join James on the tandem in lingerie. This pact echoes James’s past support, when he wore a wedding dress for a 5km run during Laing’s challenge.

Donations have climbed to £1,671,875, needing £1,821,875 total for the forfeit. James urged supporters: “Get it happening… I really need everyone to club together. I don’t wanna leave Sunderland until it’s got to £2m. I’m serious. I’m going rogue… This pain is totally worth it.”

Boost from Arielle Free and Supporters

James praised DJ Arielle Free for her tandem support through North Yorkshire. “Aside from the Olympian and Tour de France winner Geraint Thomas, Arielle Free is most in sync with me,” he said. “Absolutely motoring for the last half an hour. A life of dancing has done that for Arielle’s thighs. She’s light as a feather and as powerful as an ox.”

After a hilltop wobble, he added: “We have flown through the last 45 minutes… We’ve been able to get some pals on the back, which has given me a boost physically and mentally.” Students at York University also cheered him on during a break.

Colleague’s Concern and Milestone Reaction

Radio 1 presenter Katie Thistleton observed: “Yesterday was the first day that I really saw it on his face, I saw it in his eyes—he looked broken, he looked so tired… He’s just a machine, I’ve never seen anything like it. York to Sunderland, that’s madness!”

James described powering through hills: “My legs are like lead.” Hitting £1.5 million prompted a quip: “No! 1.5 million! To celebrate, I’m going to lie down in this pub car park. That is amazing… Thanks so much, 1.5 million is incredible.” He committed to continuing: “I’m getting back on that bike… I’ve got to get to Sunderland today.”
