A 22-year-old footballer, Denilson Mena, died after being shot during a street altercation outside a nightclub in Medellin, Colombia. The incident unfolded in the early hours of Monday morning when a dispute involving multiple individuals escalated from inside the venue to the street.
Friends quickly transported Mena, a naturalized Spaniard, and an injured woman to a nearby hospital. Medical staff pronounced him dead shortly after arrival. Investigators recovered a 9mm firearm cartridge at the scene and launched a homicide probe following reports of a gunshot as Mena collapsed.
Career Overview
Mena featured in 19 matches for Marino de Luanco, a fourth-tier Spanish club, during the 2023-24 season. He joined the youth setup at second-tier Sporting de Gijon in 2022 after a successful trial, where he trained with the senior squad and played in several friendlies.
Subsequently, he transferred to CD Tenerife, contributing to their C team and primary reserve squad last season. At the time of his death, Mena was without a club but actively seeking opportunities to revive his professional career in Europe. He had returned to Colombia to visit family and friends while finalizing his next steps.
Early Support from Agency
Inter Futbol Colombia, an organization that develops and represents Colombian talents, celebrated Mena’s signing with Sporting de Gijon in a March 2022 Instagram post. “All the news about Denilson Mena fills us with so much excitement,” the agency stated. “Thanks to our efforts and through the renowned Spanish agent Gelu Rodríguez, a few weeks ago we managed to secure his first professional contract with Sporting de Gijon in Spain. We at Inter Futbol have supported him throughout this journey. We are certain that with his character both on and off the pitch, his talent, dedication and hard work, he will go on to great things.”
Similar Tragedy in Brazil
In a related incident last November, 18-year-old Brazilian footballer Wanderson Brandao de Sousa died from a gunshot wound at his family home in Aragoiania. Authorities believe his younger brother accidentally fired the weapon while cleaning it. Wanderson, a left-back for local club Aragoiania, prompted the team to suspend all activities as tributes poured in from the sporting director, Silvan Rodrigues Castro.
