Manchester United have added Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero to their summer transfer shortlist. The Argentina international stands poised to depart Spurs following his earlier criticism of the club’s leadership this season.

Competing Interest from European Giants

Atletico Madrid pursued Romero last year but declined to meet Tottenham’s €55 million (£47 million) valuation. Officials at Atletico maintain their interest as the summer window approaches and prepare for a renewed bid.

Real Madrid also eye the 27-year-old center-back to bolster their defense. However, Manchester United’s pursuit creates significant competition for Atletico in the race for his signature.

Key Contract Release Clause

Romero’s Tottenham contract features a special provision allowing a move to Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid, or Barcelona for a €60 million (£52 million) fee this summer.

Simeone’s High Praise

Ahead of Atletico’s Champions League victory over Tottenham this month, manager Diego Simeone expressed strong admiration for Romero. “I speak from a point of view as an Argentina fan. I admire his personality, his character, his defensive work and his football ability on the ball,” Simeone stated. “As a fan of Argentina, I have seen him play more games for the national team than I have for Spurs, but I’m a big fan of him, for sure.”

Romero Focuses on Current Season

Following Tottenham’s Champions League elimination, Romero addressed speculation about his future. “The truth is that I’m focused on the situation we’re in,” he said. “I have a lot of respect and affection for the club and I want to finish the season in the best way possible. We’ll see later but the most important thing now is to recover energy.”
