Max Verstappen Ejects Reporter from Japanese GP Press Conference

Published on

Max Verstappen, the four-time Formula 1 World Champion, continues to make headlines with his no-nonsense approach. Known for his blunt demeanor since debuting at age 17 in 2015, the Dutch driver ranks among the sport’s most memorable interviewees alongside legends like Ayrton Senna and Kimi Raikkonen.

Verstappen’s Path of Achievements and Clashes

Verstappen holds records as the youngest race winner and boasts 19 victories in the dominant 2023 season, losing only once to Carlos Sainz. Yet, his success draws frequent controversy.

Past incidents include a 2018 Brazilian Grand Prix clash with Esteban Ocon, resulting in two days of public service after Verstappen pushed the Frenchman. In 2021, while chasing his first title, he faced accusations of brake-testing Lewis Hamilton in Saudi Arabia and collided with the seven-time champion twice, including Monza.

Press Conference Standoff at Japanese GP

Ahead of the Japanese Grand Prix, Verstappen halted the press conference until British journalist Giles Richards from The Guardian exited the room. Lingering tension stemmed from Richards’ question at last year’s Abu Dhabi finale.

Verstappen declared, “I’ll only start when he leaves.” When pressed on his refusal, he linked it to Richards’ inquiry about points lost in the Spanish Grand Prix—nine points after a collision with George Russell and a 10-second penalty, dropping him from fifth to 10th. This contributed to finishing second to Lando Norris by two points.

In Abu Dhabi, Richards asked if Verstappen regretted the Russell incident. Verstappen shot back, “Get out,” accusing the reporter of a ‘stupid grin.’ He later conceded the clash was a mistake, noting ‘all signs went red’ at the time.

Spanish GP Incident Details

At Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, Verstappen cut a corner, received instructions to yield position to Russell, but collided anyway. The penalty proved costly in the championship fight. Russell then labeled Verstappen’s reaction as ‘lashing out with anger and borderline violence,’ calling him ‘a bully’ struggling with setbacks.

Current Championship Battle

Fortunes have reversed: Russell leads the standings, while Verstappen sits eighth following a retirement in China. The Dutch star eyes a strong recovery in Japan, despite voicing dislike for new regulations and a preference for GT racing. His skill in extracting maximum performance keeps fans optimistic for a turnaround.
