Thirty-five years ago, Princess Diana shattered royal norms with a relatable parenting moment at her son Prince Harry’s school sports day. Known for her active involvement in raising Princes William and Harry, she aimed to provide them a typical childhood despite constant public scrutiny.
The Barefoot Mothers’ Race
In 1991 footage from Wetherby School, Diana joined other mothers in a sack race after Harry’s participation. She kicked off her shoes, raced barefoot across the grass in a blazer and skirt, and flashed a wide smile while securing a strong second place. This display highlighted her role as a devoted school mother above all.
Royal enthusiasts continue to share the clip online, with fans on X praising her dedication. One viewer noted it as evidence of “the power of just showing up for your kids, royals or not.” Another added, “She ran like every other mum who just wants to show up for her kid,” while others called the effort “impressive.”
Diana’s Commitment to Normalcy
Both princes attended Wetherby School before moving to Ludgrove and Eton. Diana competed in the Mothers’ Race there in 1989 and 1990 as well. She often handled school drop-offs, appearing outside Wetherby with her sons.
Patrick Jephson, Diana’s former press secretary, described her approach: “She made sure that they experienced things like going to the cinema, queuing up to buy a McDonald’s, going to amusement parks, those sorts of things that were experiences that they could share with their friends.”
Inherited Competitive Spirit
William and Harry echoed their mother’s athleticism in 2017 during a relay race with Kate Middleton for the Heads Together mental health initiative. In a 50-meter sprint, Harry glanced back at his brother trailing close behind. The finish proved tight between the brothers, with Kate claiming third.
