Justin Baldoni secures key victories in his legal dispute with Blake Lively, as a federal judge approves new pretrial dates and permits his production company Wayfarer to pursue a defamation lawsuit against former publicist Stephanie Jones.
Court Approves Wayfarer’s Defamation Claims
The judge rules that Wayfarer’s allegations against Jones warrant further examination. Wayfarer accuses Jones of informing Lively, her husband Ryan Reynolds, and representative Leslie Sloane that the firm attempted to tarnish Lively’s reputation following her sexual misconduct claims against Baldoni.
Jones sought dismissal of the suit, but the court denies the motion. The judge also rejects Jones’s effort to include producer Jamey Heath in the litigation.
A Wayfarer representative states: “We’re pleased with the Court’s decision to deny Stephanie Jones’ attempt to dismiss Wayfarer’s lawsuit and to allow our core claims, including defamation and bad faith conduct, to move forward.”
Pretrial Extensions Granted Amid Document Disputes
The court extends deadlines and schedules a status conference for April 2. Baldoni’s legal team argues that Lively’s attorneys submitted nearly 1,000 potential exhibits and 40 possible witnesses, creating an overwhelming “document dump” unsuitable for the impending May trial.
Baldoni’s lawyers describe the submissions as containing “voluminous amounts of plainly inadmissible material” and request additional time to review them, along with jury instructions. They deem a verdict sheet premature given ongoing motions, including their own dismissal request.
Lively’s attorneys counter on March 26 that these requests represent delay tactics that should not succeed.
Background of the Dispute
The conflict stems from “It Ends With Us,” where Lively portrays Lily Bloom and Baldoni plays Ryle Kincaid in a story of a toxic relationship based on Colleen Hoover’s 2016 novel. The film grosses $148 million domestically and $350 million worldwide but faces controversy from the stars’ allegations.
In December 2024, Lively sues Baldoni, Wayfarer Studios, its CEO, financial backer, and PR staff, alleging sexual harassment, retaliation, body shaming, and a smear campaign. Baldoni denies the claims and files a $400 million countersuit in January against Lively, Reynolds, and Sloane, initially seeking $250 million from The New York Times over a related report. Courts dismiss parts of his suit in June.
All parties deny the allegations. A recent six-hour settlement meeting with Magistrate Judge Sarah L. Cave fails to resolve the case ahead of the May 18 trial.
Careers of Key Figures
Lively rises to fame on “Gossip Girl” (2007-2012) as Serena van der Woodsen and stars in films like “The Town” (2010), “The Shallows” (2016), “A Simple Favor” (2018), and “The Rhythm Section” (2020).
Baldoni gains recognition as Rafael Solano on “Jane the Virgin” (2014-2019), directs “Five Feet Apart” (2019) and “Clouds” (2020), and authors “Man Enough” (2021) on modern masculinity.
