James Tolkan Dies at 94: Back to the Future and Top Gun Icon

Published on

James Tolkan, celebrated for his memorable roles in Back to the Future and Top Gun, passed away on Thursday, March 26, at age 94.

He died peacefully at his home in Saranac Lake, New York. The official Back to the Future website announced his passing, though the cause of death remains undisclosed.

Tolkan leaves behind his wife of 54 years, Parmelee, and three nieces.

Personal Life and Early Career

Tolkan met Parmelee while starring in the 1971 off-Broadway production Pinkville, where she worked as a prop girl. They married later that year in Lake Placid.

After training with Stella Adler and Lee Strasberg at The Actors Studio, he dedicated 25 years to New York theater.

Transition to Film and Iconic Roles

Based in New York, Tolkan landed key film parts, including Sidney Lumet’s Prince of the City (1981), Serpico (1973), and Family Business (1989).

In 1983, he shifted to California and Canada for WarGames, propelling his Hollywood trajectory.

His standout performances feature Mr. Strickland across the Back to the Future trilogy (1985, 1989, 1990) and Commander Tom ‘Stinger’ Jardian opposite Tom Cruise in Top Gun (1986).

Additional credits include a dual role as Napoleon and his double in Woody Allen’s Love and Death (1975), alongside The Friends of Eddie Coyle (1973), The Amityville Horror (1979), Wolfen (1981), Masters of the Universe (1987), True Blood (1989), Opportunity Knocks (1990), and Dick Tracy (1990). He continued working through 2011.

From Humble Beginnings to Stardom

Born June 20, 1931, in Calumet, Michigan, Tolkan navigated early hardships. At 14, after his parents divorced, he biked through Chicago before settling in Tucson, Arizona, and graduating from Amphitheater High School in 1949.

Following a brief Navy stint during the Korean War and studies at Coe College and the University of Iowa, he arrived in New York City with $75. He labored on the docks before joining The Actors Studio.

Recent Cast Losses

Tolkan’s death occurs soon after Back to the Future co-star Matt Clark died on March 15 at 89. Clark passed at his Austin, Texas, home from back surgery complications, his wife Sharon confirmed.

Clark shone as Chester the Bartender in Back to the Future Part III, alongside Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, and Mary Steenburgen.
