Henderson Defends Ben White After England Fans’ Boos in Uruguay Draw

England midfielder Jordan Henderson pledges full support for Arsenal defender Ben White, who faced boos from the Wembley crowd during the recent friendly draw with Uruguay.

The On-Field Incident

White marked his return to the England squad with a mixed 25-minute appearance. Substituting for Fikayo Tomori, the 28-year-old drew jeers from fans upon entering the pitch. He soon silenced critics by scoring to put England 1-0 ahead, only to concede a late penalty that Federico Valverde converted for a 1-1 draw.

This was White’s first England outing since departing the 2022 World Cup camp for personal reasons and opting out of selection for the rest of Gareth Southgate’s tenure. Thomas Tuchel now offers him a fresh opportunity.

Henderson’s Strong Backing

Henderson, no stranger to fan backlash after his Saudi Arabia transfer, stands firmly by White. “As team-mates, we always support each other,” Henderson stated. “Most fans back all the players.”

He highlighted the challenges of public scrutiny: “I’ve experienced it myself—it’s part of playing for England. Some fans boo without knowing why, swayed by media narratives that often stray from the truth.”

Addressing White’s Qatar exit, Henderson noted, “Few understand the full story; we handle it internally. Ben has performed well since returning, and we’ll continue supporting him.”

Henderson urged resilience against external noise: “A few of us have faced this—it’s tough, but don’t take it personally. Media spins stories, fans latch on, but we ensure he’s okay. I was thrilled he scored; that’s what counts.”
