Placebo Wows with Rare Acoustic Tracks at Teenage Cancer Trust Gig

Published on

Rock band Placebo returned to the stage after a two-year touring hiatus, delivering an acoustic set at the Royal Albert Hall to support Garbage during a Teenage Cancer Trust event curated by Robert Smith.

Placebo’s Triumphant Return

Lead singer Brian Molko, 53, and guitarist Stefan Olsdal, 51, took the stage smiling. Molko appeared without his recent mustache, evoking the band’s 1990s origins. He admitted to the crowd, ‘We haven’t toured in two years. We’re s***ting it,’ visibly surprised by the enthusiastic applause.

The performance celebrates 30 years since Placebo’s self-titled debut album. The band recently announced Placebo Re:Created, a reworked version releasing on June 19, along with a European 30th anniversary tour starting September 28 in Portugal. The tour features 36 dates, reviving tracks from the debut and Without You I’m Nothing not played live in over 20 years.

Acoustic Set Highlights

Instead of expected hits like ‘Nancy Boy’ or ‘Teenage Angst,’ Placebo offered rare gems. They opened with a Sinead O’Connor cover, ‘Jackie,’ followed by ‘Special Needs’ from Sleeping With Ghosts. A slowed-down ‘Beautiful James’ from Never Let Me Go captivated fans, closing with ‘Centrefolds’ under a disco ball’s shimmering lights.

Garbage’s Powerful Performance

Garbage kicked off with the title track from their latest album, Let All That We Imagine Be the Light. Frontwoman Shirley Manson delivered high-energy vocals, declaring she would ‘always and forever rock HARDER than most.’ The set included ‘Fix Me Now’ and ‘I Think I’m Paranoid’ from their debut.

Manson apologized for recent laryngitis but shone with flawless notes. A standout was The Cure’s ‘Lovesong,’ honoring Robert Smith.

Before the show, Manson and Molko reunited, reflecting on their shared festival history since the 1990s.

Placebo’s Legacy and New Release

Placebo’s 1996 debut defied Britpop norms, tackling androgyny, queerness, addiction, and alienation. Breakthrough singles ‘Nancy Boy’ and ’36 Degrees’ built a cult following.

Placebo Re:Created revisits the master tapes as a ‘director’s cut,’ incorporating live evolution while preserving raw energy. It includes all original tracks plus two bonuses. The band describes it as blending their past and present, available for pre-order in CD, cassette, box set, and vinyl formats.
