Charlie Kirk Shooting: Bullet Doesn’t Match Suspect’s Rifle

Published on

The bullet that fatally wounded conservative activist Charlie Kirk in the neck during a speech at Utah Valley University does not match the rifle linked to suspect Tyler Robinson, defense attorneys claim.

Defense Challenges Key Forensic Evidence

Tyler Robinson faces the death penalty for the alleged assassination. Court documents reveal that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives failed to connect the bullet recovered during autopsy to the rifle associated with Robinson. The FBI conducts additional tests while the defense requests six months to review thousands of documents.

Defense filings state that the team devotes significant resources to processing discovery materials, including identifying missing items for the preliminary hearing. A comprehensive review requires hundreds of hours, attorneys note. Robinson has not yet received essential forensic files and data needed for expert analysis of the state’s scientific reports.

Prosecution Presents DNA Evidence

Prosecutors report DNA matching Robinson on the rifle’s trigger, a fired cartridge casing, and two unfired cartridges. Defense attorneys highlight that forensic reports show DNA from multiple individuals on some items, necessitating deeper analysis.

Motive and Sheriff’s Role in Surrender

Robinson texted his romantic partner that he targeted Kirk because he “had enough of his hatred,” according to prosecutors. The sheriff who persuaded Robinson to surrender, Nate Brooksby, has resigned amid complaints about office operations.

Deputy County Attorney Courtney Sinagra confirmed Brooksby’s resignation stemmed from those concerns, though he disputed them. Brooksby explained that negotiations emphasized a delicate approach: “Part of the negotiation of getting him to bring himself in was that we would treat it as delicate and as soft as possible to make him feel comfortable to where he would show up at my office.”

Background on Suspect Tyler Robinson

Robinson resided with his family in Washington County, Utah, near Arizona and Nevada borders. State records show no prior criminal history. A registered but inactive voter, he did not vote in the previous presidential election.

At the time of the incident, the 21-year-old pursued a third-year electrical apprenticeship at Dixie Technical College in St. George. A high school honor roll student scoring in the 99th percentile on national tests, he received an academic scholarship to Utah State University in 2021 but attended only one semester.

Neighbors describe the family positively. Steven Green, from the same local Mormon church, called them a “great family, good kids,” though he knew Robinson minimally. Classmate Canaan Timothy recalled him as a quiet, average student interested in music who associated with the school band.

A court hearing on a defense motion to prohibit cameras in the courtroom is scheduled for April 17.
