England’s World Cup Hopes Rest on Harry Kane After Japan Loss

Published on

England suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Japan at home, highlighting the critical role Harry Kane plays in their World Cup aspirations. The striker missed the match due to a minor injury from the final training session, raising concerns about the team’s depth ahead of the tournament.

Tuchel’s Tactical Experiments Fall Flat

Manager Thomas Tuchel faced questions about alternatives to Kane before the game, following experiments with Dominic Solanke and Dominic Calvert-Lewin in a prior 1-1 draw against Uruguay. He admitted having ideas but kept them private.

Against Japan, Tuchel deployed Phil Foden as a false nine, Cole Palmer centrally, Morgan Rogers on the right, and Anthony Gordon on the left in a narrow formation. Palmer’s error led to Kaoru Mitoma’s match-winning goal, marking Japan as the first Asian nation to defeat England.

Foden struggled, recording zero shots from 22 touches before substitution at the hour mark, while goalkeeper Jordan Pickford had 39 touches. Substitutions including Solanke up top, Rogers in midfield, Jarrod Bowen on the right, and Marcus Rashford later brought minor improvement, but late pressure via set-pieces yielded little, with Lewis Hall’s effort saved by Zion Suzuki.

Ben White faced boos pre-kickoff, and the team drew jeers at full time from the remaining 79,233 fans, most of whom had departed early.

Kane’s Indispensable Impact

Kane stands as one of the world’s top strikers, netting 53 goals in 45 appearances for Bayern Munich and England this season. His leadership extends beyond the pitch.

Since the 2018 World Cup—where he claimed the Golden Boot—England boasts a 65% win rate in 88 starts with Kane, dropping to 57% in 14 without him. The gap feels even wider.

Tuchel acknowledged, “In the absence of Harry Kane, we don’t have the same threat. Bayern Munich without Harry Kane lacks that threat. No team in the world has the same threat—it’s normal. Top teams rely on top players.”

He added, “We lost not only him as a player but as a personality. It’s disruptive when the captain leaves training early. We can win without Harry, we will win without him, but it’s easier with him.”

Squad Depth Challenges Ahead

Beyond injuries, extreme heat in the United States demands rotation. Ollie Watkins sat out this squad, while Solanke, Calvert-Lewin, and Foden underperformed. Watkins pushes for a World Cup spot, alongside potential calls for Danny Welbeck, the top-scoring Englishman in the Premier League at 35.

England’s perfect World Cup qualifying run contrasts with a mixed record against top-20 teams under Tuchel: one draw and two losses versus Senegal, Uruguay, and Japan. Key returns like Jude Bellingham, Declan Rice, and Bukayo Saka loom, but solutions without Kane remain elusive as the tournament nears.
