Why Chow Yun-Fat Outshines Cruise as Cinema’s Top Action Hero

Published on

Redefining Action Heroes

Action cinema icons like Tom Cruise dazzle with daring stunts in the Mission Impossible series, while Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, and Jean-Claude Van Damme dominate with imposing physiques. Yet Chow Yun-Fat stands out as the most compelling action star, blending unbreakable toughness with raw vulnerability in Hong Kong’s landmark films.

Recent 4K re-releases of A Better Tomorrow (1986) and Hard Boiled (1992) spotlight his work with director John Woo. Now, The Killer (1989) arrives in US theaters on April 5, 6, and 8.

Versatility Beyond Stunts

Film critic Sean Gilman, creator of The Chinese Cinema website, highlights Chow’s edge over peers like Jackie Chan and Jet Li. Chow lacks their spectacular stunt work but excels in range, channeling the physicality of Burt Lancaster, the cool of Alain Delon, the sophistication of Cary Grant, or the silliness of Jerry Lewis—all in one film.

Chow’s peak shines in Woo collaborations, where the director pioneers hyperkinetic action with extreme firepower, body counts, and balletic camera work. Critic Dave Kehr calls Woo’s films “ballets full of bullets,” noting their influence on Spielberg, Tarantino, The Matrix, and Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man.

Chow anchors Woo’s and Ringo Lam’s fantasies—like City on Fire (1987)—in gritty reality. Gilman describes him as a “working-class Hongkonger” navigating violence with personal honor.

Breakout and Influential Roles

In A Better Tomorrow, Chow’s supporting role as Mark, the poised Triad member, cements his charisma—iconically lighting a cigarette with a burning banknote.

The Killer cements his legacy as hitman Ah Jong, who blinds singer Jenny in a shootout and seeks redemption. Early scenes show him writhing as a bullet exits his back, underscoring his emotional fragility in a ruthless world.

Traces of Ah Jong appear in Keanu Reeves’ John Wick series, fusing Woo’s gunplay with Chow’s soulful intensity. Gilman calls him the “emotional center,” weary yet passionate, with “an endless supply of bullets.” Cop Li Ying (Danny Lee) observes Ah Jong’s “eyes… full of compassion, full of passion.”

Chow conveys betrayal’s sting—with tears—more painfully than physical wounds. His action prowess shines: leaping over a motorbike mid-air to fire at another. Playfulness peeks through banter with Li Ying.

Critic Elena Lazic, founder of Animus magazine, praises 1980s-90s Chow as more gregarious than Hollywood stars. Unlike Stallone, Chow visibly relishes the role.

Evolution in Hard Boiled

In Hard Boiled, Chow’s cop Tequila openly expresses humanity—unlike Ah Jong’s restraint. Relaxed in loose jackets, he debuts playing clarinet in a jazz club.

A Timely Contrast to Modern Action

Today’s Marvel heroes seem invincible via VFX. Chow’s grounded, complex characters offer a refreshing counterpoint, making superhuman feats feel human.
