Haaland Hat-Trick Fuels Man City 4-0 Rout of Liverpool

Published on

Manchester City delivered a ruthless 4-0 victory over Liverpool at the Etihad Stadium, with Erling Haaland’s hat-trick highlighting the hosts’ dominance. Liverpool mounted a competitive start but collapsed after conceding early, exposing vulnerabilities under manager Arne Slot.

First-Half Breakdown

Liverpool controlled possession and created promising angles in midfield during the opening 30 minutes. However, they struggled to convert opportunities into real threats. Mohamed Salah encountered his first clear chance in the 15th minute, racing onto a clearance from goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili. After shaking off Abdukodir Khusanov, Salah faced City goalkeeper James Trafford one-on-one but skewed his shot wide for a throw-in.

Two minutes later, Salah attempted to beat Marc Guehi but ran the ball out of play. Liverpool generated another opening when Curtis Jones laid off Salah’s cross to Hugo Ekitike, who fired over the bar from a promising position.

City struck first in the 37th minute via a penalty. Nico O’Reilly shielded the ball from Virgil van Dijk, who brought him down. Haaland converted low to Mamardashvili’s left. Minutes before halftime, Liverpool’s defense faltered on a throw-in. They lost possession, allowing Antoine Semenyo to receive a cross unchallenged. Haaland outjumped Ibrahima Konate to head in the second goal.

Second-Half Demolition

The restart brought no respite for Liverpool. Five minutes in, Joe Gomez lost the ball on a throw-in, enabling Rayan Cherki to find Semenyo, who chipped over Mamardashvili for City’s third.

Haaland completed his hat-trick before the hour mark, slamming a shot off the bar and in. Salah’s afternoon worsened with a ballooned chance, followed by a penalty after Matheus Nunes fouled Ekitike. Trafford saved Salah’s weak effort comfortably.

With 14 minutes remaining, Slot substituted Salah for Federico Chiesa amid Liverpool’s ongoing struggles.

Key Performances and Implications

Haaland’s clinical finishing propelled City, who shifted gears decisively after taking the lead, mirroring their recent Carabao Cup final display against Arsenal. O’Reilly impressed throughout, while Semenyo contributed with a goal and assist.

Salah and Van Dijk endured difficult outings, with Liverpool lacking fight and organization post-first goal. Only the Champions League clash with PSG remains, where Slot faces pressure amid a challenging season. Salah’s potential involvement in Paris raises questions given his form.
