UK Resident Doctors Launch Six-Day NHS Strike Amid £3bn Cost Row

Published on

Resident doctors in the UK have launched a six-day strike over pay disputes and job opportunities, after data shows their previous actions cost the NHS £3 billion over the last three years.

Strike Details and Impact

Tens of thousands of resident doctors, previously referred to as junior doctors, formed picket lines starting at 7 a.m. They rejected a government pay offer that Health Secretary Wes Streeting described as leaving them 35.2 percent better off compared to four years ago. NHS leaders anticipate challenges in managing the action, especially with heightened demand after the bank holiday weekend. Patients receive encouragement to seek care for health issues as normal.

The strike disrupts services significantly, costing the NHS £50 million daily. This week’s action projects a £300 million financial hit. Hospital administrators cancel procedures and offer consultants up to £313 per hour to fill gaps left by striking doctors.

The £3 billion from prior strikes could fund 1.5 million operations, 15 million outpatient visits, or salaries for 75,000 nurses for a year—or construct three new hospitals. Officials describe this as one of the NHS’s longest strikes in recent years, complicated by short notice and Easter holiday scheduling. While 95 percent of planned appointments proceed, thousands face postponement. Patients should attend unless notified otherwise.

Government Offer and Negotiations

Tensions escalated after the British Medical Association’s (BMA) resident doctors’ committee rejected the government’s proposal. It included a 4.9 percent average basic pay rise for 2026-2027 and 1,000 additional training positions. Negotiations collapsed amid disagreements.

Dr. Jack Fletcher, chair of the BMA’s resident doctors’ committee, stated on a London picket line that the government refuses to engage during the strike. Health Secretary Wes Streeting countered that the BMA secured the largest public sector pay uplift under the current administration—28.9 percent shortly after the government’s formation—and that he negotiated in good faith.

Streeting highlighted on the Today Programme that full pay restoration to 2008 levels, adjusted for RPI inflation, would cost £3 billion annually for resident doctors alone. Extending it to other NHS staff could reach £30 billion yearly, exceeding the Ministry of Justice’s entire budget. He criticized the BMA’s stance as intransigent despite substantial gains.

Training Places Scrapped

The Department of Health and Social Care announced last Thursday that the 1,000 extra training places are no longer viable financially or operationally due to the industrial action. Streeting confirmed on the Today Programme that recruitment timelines miss the September start, citing both operational needs and strike-related costs.

BMA Internal Disputes and Future Actions

BMA staff enter the second day of their 48-hour strike over pay, where the union offers a 2.75 percent increase—less than half the 4.9 percent proposed to resident doctors. Streeting remarked on the apparent inconsistency, urging resolution.

Health experts estimate each strike costs the NHS up to £300 million. NHS England’s Professor Ramani Moonesinghe noted the timing post-Easter weekend poses difficulties but reaffirmed calls for patients to attend appointments unless contacted.

Streeting called the action disappointing, emphasizing efforts to protect patients and minimize service disruptions. He affirmed commitment to the NHS amid the 15th such strike since 2023. Upcoming ballots from May 11 to July 6 will ask senior medics, consultants, and specialist doctors to vote on potential strikes following a 3.5 percent pay award announcement.
