Spencer Matthews has opened up about how competing with his wife, Vogue Williams, for work opportunities created tension in their marriage.
Early Collaborative Projects Sparked Rivalry
The couple, married since 2018, previously shared a TV series titled The Spencer and Vogue Show and co-hosted a podcast called Spencer & Vogue. Speaking on Matt Willis’s On the Mend podcast, the 37-year-old Spencer described the dynamic.
“She’s an incredible woman. Anyone that’s met my wife immediately loves her. She’s easily the favorite of the two of us,” Spencer said. He explained that their joint ventures fostered a sense of competition, with constant jabs on camera about who was funnier or more entertaining.
“Ultimately you’re entertaining. So, who’s more entertaining?” he noted. Spencer eventually stepped back from these collaborations to focus on performance, sports, and his project Untapped, while Vogue pursued television presenting.
Differences Prove Beneficial
Spencer highlighted how their diverging career paths have strengthened their relationship. “I’ve never wanted to be a TV presenter. So having those differences in what we do has been really helpful,” he stated. “When she lands something, I’m really proud of her.”
Previously, when both vied for similar roles, success for one felt like a setback for the other. “You’re happy for your partner obviously, but it’s also a bit of a kick in the teeth. It’s like, well, why didn’t I get it? That creates… a slight competition… If you’re in a competitive scenario with your partner, it can be a bit grating.”
Vogue Addresses Marriage Rumors
In November, the 40-year-old Vogue dismissed speculation about troubles in their marriage, following their decision not to publicly celebrate their seventh anniversary and Spencer’s podcast departure. She emphasized that only their personal truth matters.
“When he left our podcast, everyone was like, ‘What’s going on?'” she recalled. Vogue expressed concern over her children hearing unfounded gossip at school. The couple shares son Theodore, 7, daughter Gigi, 5, and son Otto, 3.
Addressing the issue directly on Instagram, Vogue wrote: “It’s with great sadness that I have to let you know that Spen and I are NOT breaking up! I usually avoid addressing baseless and cruel rumours, but this just keeps coming up. It’s disappointing to see this narrative being pushed almost daily when it’s absolutely not true, and much more importantly, I don’t want my children hearing these lies in the playground. We’re not sure what the angle is or where it’s coming from, but the whole thing feels very strange and mean. We’re very happily married and in love and I hope posting the truth on my own platform might make it stop.”
